Overdue Book returned after 50 years

An elderly gentleman walks into Preston Library this afternoon looking around for some assistance, book in hand. Staff approached him and asked how they could help him.

The gentleman hands the book to staff and informs them that it's overdue and he's returning it.

The staff asked: "When was it due?"

The man replies: "1963"

Confused, the staff asked him to clarify.

The man explains: "It was due in 1963."

He continued …. "I used to attend Preston Tech. It was a Friday afternoon in Chemistry class. I ask my chemistry teacher if I can leave 5 minutes early to catch the bus. The teacher says (abruptly) "No you may not". Angry, I stood up and left, NEVER to return. "

Fifty years later, he decided today was the day to return the book.

The moral to this story…

Good, or in this case, Bad Customer Service can stay with a customer for life!

So, it's important to always offer Excellent Customer Service.

The book is on display at the NMIT Preston Library Information Desk.

Merry Christmas

From all the staff at NMIT Library
We wish you a very Merry Christmas and a
Safe and Prosperous New Year.
See you in 2014!

Library Staff saluted after 2013 InSync Library Survey:

Librarians lauded for student satisfaction

NMIT's library staff have set themselves apart in the InSync Client Satisfaction Benchmarking Survey.

The survey compares the level of student and staff satisfaction with the library resources and staff engagement across the Institute. The libraries of 32 universities and two TAFEs around Australia participated in this year's survey.

The results of the survey were presented to NMIT's CEO, Andrew Giddy, and other key stakeholders by Michael Samarchi from InSync Surveys on Wednesday 23rd October.

NMIT's staff scored in the top 25% in library satisfaction. The high correlation between services that students and staff deemed to be important and services thought to be performed well is testament to the library's commitment to improvement and overall high level of service.

The study also looked at how NMIT's students use the library, most students are using study areas, computers and library resources. There was also research into how students use their personal devices such as laptops and tablets.

Informing Development

The latest results mark an improvement from the previous study completed in 2011. NMIT Library has participated in the InSync survey, biennially, since 2009 with continual improvement identified in each survey.

Since NMIT's participation in the InSync survey, the library has introduced a number of changes to assist staff and students. These improvements include a 68% increase in computer workstations, following the 2009 survey. The development of the Library Research Skills databank, increased learning spaces, improved WiFi connectivity and website, following the 2011 survey, greatly enhanced the library.

For a copy of the full executive summary & bench-marking reports: https://staff.nmit.vic.edu.au/departments/infoservices/MinReports/Department%20Improvement%20Reports/Forms/AllItems.aspx

NMIT Library would like to thank both staff and students who gave their time to participate in this year's survey. The feedback is invaluable in helping the Institute to improve the library, resources and services.

The New Library Website Is Here!

The New Library Website Is Here!

We have redesigned our website to align with the look of the NMIT web presence. The library website has a fresh and modern interface with clear features for better navigation.

It provides bright obvious access options for all the searches you will need to locate resources and to find information about library services.

Some of the key changes are:

·      Fresh familiar interface similar to the NMIT website

·      Bright clear layout for ease of searching

·      Navigation includes five simple headings - Borrow, Find, Help, Services and About

·      Quicklinks to frequently performed tasks such as renew your loans, opening hours, databases &              eJournals A-Z, chat to a librarian, and reference your work.

·      Funky dynamic word cloud linking to the most tagged LibGuides

·      Adaptability for mobile devices

What we have not changed is the FindIt@ search box. It is still the best place to start any of your research. Similar to Google search, FindIt@ is a single search interface where you can find everything NMIT library holds on a topic.

There is so much at your fingertips – please explore and enjoy. Visit http://library.nmit.vic.edu.au/
